Eric is an intern with our team, and after working with us for a few months, we asked him to share his experiences in a new blog article.

What It’s Like Working at a Marketing Research Firm?
To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect working at a marketing research firm; this is my first desk job after all. Was it going to be staring at nothing but statistics and graphs? Was it going to be endless hours of research like I’ve been doing these past four years in my college career?
After my first day at S2 Research, I realized that my predictions were completely off. Working at a marketing research firm is much more interesting than I had expected!
Every day I’m working on a variety of new projects, such as market research surveys and market research for agencies. One day, I can be building an entire survey report so our clients can easily discover insights for their business. The next day, I can be writing personas depicting the ideal consumer for another client, demonstrating their hypothetical attitudes and behaviors. When I finish client work, I may even find myself doing projects for S2 Research, such as writing blogs, presentation surveys, and other neat things.
Let’s just say I’ve never had this much fun working!
What Are You Currently Working On?
I am currently working on a survey project for a client who wants to better understand their target audience's attitudes and perceptions of their industry. This was an interesting one, because I knew very little about their industry going into the project, despite how important it is in our world. Here, I assisted in creating and editing the survey, as well as building the report when all the data comes in.
I’m also helping Matt out with some content marketing, particularly with his new upcoming book, The Creative Catalyst. I’ve only read through half of it so far, yet it’s such a great read, especially as a marketer.
What Is Your Favorite Project You’ve Worked On So Far?
My favorite project by far is one we did for a finance company that specializes in factored financing. This was a unique one, because we actually didn’t write a survey for them. Instead, we built them a full marketing strategy using secondary research, along with our team’s own expertise. We created four phases for them, and added a checklist for the client before they moved on to the next phase. Matt even went out of his way to program a blog helper to assist the client’s marketing efforts. Presenting the strategy and seeing the client’s reaction brought a smile to my face. It truly felt like we were a great market research partner to them.
Why Did You Decide to Work at S2 Research?
It’s funny how connections are made nowadays. I found out about Matt and S2 Research through his presentation at one of my class lectures at UNLV. He simplified marketing research and used real world examples to display its significance to the success of any business, and in turn, influenced me to branch out into marketing research. And because of his expertise and time in marketing, I thought to myself, “I have to work with an exceptional marketer like him!”
A few weeks later, my professor emailed me about Matt’s internship, and I quickly responded to that email in excitement. After seeing his presentation, I knew working here would provide me with valuable experience as a marketer. After several emails and interviews with Matt, I suddenly saw myself working with him at S2 Research.
What Do You Like Most About Working at a Marketing Research Firm?
I think being able to help out our clients by providing them the valuable insights that can give them the boost they need to grow their business. It’s one thing gathering research for a class you’re trying to get a good grade in. It’s a whole different ball park doing it for actual people, and it’s exhilarating doing research and gathering insights for them.
You see, at S2 Research, we work on a variety of projects, each providing their own unique insights. From people’s opinions on an outdoor luxury furniture item, to understanding vacation planning post COVID-19, each report has provided significant data and insights for our clients.
What I really like, however, is when we go above and beyond for our clients.
Sometimes, a client may want a specific breakout of the data, such as the survey data based on a certain demographic. And I just love how we’re able to provide that data to them in a timely manner, even if it wasn’t part of the plan.
But it’s not just about gaining insights from marketing research, it’s also about shaping those insights into a meaningful story to help our client’s businesses flourish and be the best they can be. Being able to see the satisfaction from our clients and their appreciation of our work is what drives me to become better!
What Do You Hope to Achieve Working at S2 Research?
Down the road, I hope to tackle and manage my own research project from start to finish. I know the process, and completing the project would be such an accomplishment for myself. Thus, I hope to achieve the role of project manager as S2 Research expands.
Also, I ultimately hope to achieve a developed marketing skillset. One of the reasons I chose to work at S2 is because I wanted to enhance what I can do as a marketer, and Matt would be the perfect person to learn from. I have to say, after just a few months, I’m confident that I’ll be able to achieve these two objectives,
